Luxembourg is often quoted as the wealthiest country in the world. According to one measure “Median Wealth”, that being the wealth of the person that is richer than 50% of the country and poorer than 50% of the country, they are usually the richest and surprisingly Australia comes in second. The wealth of a country though isn’t always felt by all its citizens. One thing going for Luxembourg was that public transport is free. Thats not just within the major city, but also on the trains to the villages around this country. The country has a similar population and size to Canberra and the Australian Capital Territory where I live.

I couldn’t find any free walking tours in Luxembourg, but I did find a handy walking tour guide on the internet and so followed that. Luxembourg city is quite compact but it sits on two levels. Most of the city is on the upper level, traditional for older european cities as it was a good defensive position, but some of the upper city is now much more modern, with a lot of glass and concrete edifices.

The real highlights are the smaller pockets of older buildings nestled besides the river and even built into the cliff. Down by the river there were parts of the old castle walls and some old bridges as well. Looking up into the cliffs I could see man made caves carved into the rock that are part of the Casements, which were built for defence of the city.

I just really enjoyed exploring the city on foot and using the free public transport. I do plan to come back one day and actually visit some of the countryside of Luxembourg as well. For every amazing place i’ve visited on this trip, I’ve missed equally amazing places elsewhere!
